Description
Taunton Station (South Block) is a two-storey building constructed around 1845, when the railway was opened. It is made of white brick and features lower wings on either side. The building has a cornice and a parapet, topped with a hipped slate roof. There are three windows, with the end window bays projecting slightly. The windows are sashes, with a triple light in the center, set in painted moulded surrounds with glazing bars. The ground floor includes windows and a central doorway, both adorned with cornices on brackets. A canopy over the ground floor is supported by curved iron brackets with scrolled detail and has a frilled edge. To the left, there is a contemporary one-storey range that features a large round-headed archway with a keystone in the corner and a canopy above. Taunton Station (South Block) is part of a group that includes the former Great Western Hotel and the Wheel Tapper Public House.
