Description
The Gothic ruin, located about half a mile north of Crowcombe Court, is a folly designed in the form of a ruined Gothic chapel, dating from around 1776 and incorporating some medieval stonework. It is constructed from red sandstone random rubble with limestone dressings. The building has a cruciform plan, with the east end overlooking a stream. It stands two stories tall and features three bays on each side. The large arched window opening at the east end has remains of cusped tracery and finials on the gable end, flanked by symmetrical, buttressed wings. The first floor has arched openings, while the larger openings below also show remnants of cusped tracery. The north side has a moulded arched entrance, and the south side features a round-headed arch entrance. The ruin is picturesquely situated high above the stream, halfway up a steep wooded slope. It was inaccessible at the time of survey in August 1983 due to dense undergrowth. Some of the tracery is reported to have originated from demolished parts of Halsway Manor or the earlier Crowcombe Manor, which was demolished in 1724.
