Description
Stoford Fair House is a cottage that likely dates back to the 16th century, with a refronting from the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in an irregular version of English Garden wall bond, sitting on a rubble plinth with Ham stone dressings on the sides and part of the rear. The cottage features a thatched roof and has brick stacks at both ends and in the center.
The building is two stories high and has four bays. The entrance door is located in the second bay and is topped by a very deep stone lintel. The ground floor has three-light chamfered mullioned windows, while the upper floor features three-light timber casements. There is a stone garage extension on the south side, which has a double Roman clay tiled roof, likely from the 19th century. The north gable displays a substantial stepped rubble chimney breast.
Inside, on the north wall, there is a partly blocked fireplace with chamfered sides and a massive stone lintel above. In the same room, there is a deep chamfered arched beam with chamfer stops, along with several old doors. Evidence of external quoins and variations in the internal walling indicates that the roof may have been raised by about 0.6 meters, possibly during the 19th century when the refronting occurred.
