Description
Nos. 1-7 on Fairhouse Road are two pairs of semi-detached houses built in 1925 by Petter Warren. They feature rendered concrete slab cavity walls and a steel roof construction with a segmental section, clad in corrugated-iron sheets. The houses have red brick stacks and are designed as two pairs of semi-detached non-parlour houses.
The exterior is two storeys high with symmetrical four-window west fronts that include wide segmental gable ends. There are later 20th-century two-light casements and glazed doors on the left and right, each with canopies above.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that these houses were constructed for the local council as low-cost housing. Their design is based on the principles used by Lieutenant Colonel Nissen of the Royal Engineers in the construction of Nissen huts during the First World War. Similar houses can be found in Higher Bullen, Barwick, Yeovil, and West Camel in South Somerset District, as well as in Bampton in Mid Devon District.
