Description
Holme Garth is a house that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and has two storeys. The building features three bays and a two-storey, two-bay outshut on the west side. The west front has quoins on the left side, with a 20th-century casement window on each floor. The outshut includes two square windows with flush ashlar surrounds on the ground floor, one 20th-century window, and a two-light double-chamfered mullion window above. There is a part-glazed four-panel door in a chamfered ashlar surround leading to an internal porch, with a four-pane fixed-light window above it, also in a chamfered surround. The main range displays ovolo-shaped kneelers, ashlar coping, and end stacks, including a very large stepped external stack on the left. Inside the porch, there is an original main doorway with a chamfered ashlar surround and a triangular soffit to the lintel. Historically, the building served as an inn called the Pig and Whistle when the main road from Richmond followed the line of the present track leading past Holme Garth out of the village to the southeast, and there are blocked cellars present.
