Description
Dakyn House, originally known as John Dakin's Almshouse, is a hospital of St John the Baptist that dates back to 1754. It was founded by Reverend John Dakyn, Doctor of Divinity. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with stone slate roofs and features a double-depth plan. It has two and one storeys with four bays facing the village green. The structure includes quoins at the ends and to the left of the second bay.
All openings have 20th-century ashlar architraves, and the windows are mostly three-light mullions. From the left, there is a window on each floor, a boarded door with a single-light window above, another window on each floor, a 20th-century plaque displaying the current name, and above it, a circular plaque inscribed "Built by Tho. Buckton, Fra. Allen 1754." There are ground-floor windows, a boarded door, and another ground-floor window. The building has rebuilt stacks at both ends and in the center, and it features a two-span roof.
Originally, the hospital accommodated 27 inmates, but this number was reduced to 12 men and 12 women in 1803 when the building was extended. In the 1950s, it was converted into a smaller number of flats.
