Description

This is a house, dating from the 16th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of timber frame and stone, with a pantile roof. The house is two storeys high and has three bays, with a single-story aisle along the west side. The ground floor is faced with gritstone, while the upper floor is timber-framed, featuring large curved braces and close studding. A six-panel door, covered by a gabled hood between bays three and four, is flanked by three-light windows from the 20th century. Bay one has two large 20th-century windows with small panes, one in the former door position. The first floor has two windows of two lights, and one window of three lights; these frames slightly project and were renewed in the mid-20th century. Chimneys are located at the ends of the building and between bays two and three, all rendered. The rear of the house has rendered walls, a 20th-century door, and 20th-century windows. The aisle roof is covered in pantiles, with the lowest courses made of stone slate. The left return is rendered and lined, with a 20th-century window on the first floor to the right and a small attic window above. The right return has a side-sliding sash window with glazing bars to the ground and first floors. Timber framing is visible at the first floor and gable, and a large stone chimney stack, now rendered, is also present. Inside, original beams and joists remain. A large stone fireplace is located between bays one and two, featuring a monolithic mantle block. The staircase, likely repositioned, is at the rear of the house and has turned balusters of a 17th-century style. The upper rooms have ceilings at collar height.
