Description
This garden ornament, located approximately 10 metres west of the Hall at Newby Park, is a cinerary urn that dates back to the Roman period, likely from the 1st century AD, and was restored in the 20th century or earlier. Made of white marble, it features a plinth with a moulded base and cornice, adorned with paired masks in relief and hanging leafy branches. The urn itself has a fluted and gadrooned stem (which has been restored), and its straight sides display birds and fruit in shallow relief, along with a cartouche inscribed with "DIS MANIBUS / S ACRUM / Q MINUCLVS FELIX". The lid is topped with a weathered acorn-type finial. This ornament is thought to be part of the Roman treasures brought to England by William Weddell in 1765. The separate plinth may have originally supported a statue.
