Description

This is a three-storey building on Kirkgate in Ripon, dating from the 16th century and enlarged in 1760, according to deeds, by Joseph Drake, a carpenter. It was evidently refronted in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brown brick, topped with a pantiled roof. It has paired cut brackets supporting the gutter. The facade has two bays with sash windows featuring channelled stucco voussoirs. A contemporary shopfront features panelled Tuscan pilasters and an entablature, with a door consisting of two moulded panels and an oblong fanlight.

Inside, there is a wide ingle nook with a bressummer supporting a beam with pyramidal chamfers, a style of carpentry apparently unusual in the area before the 17th century. The 1760 enlargement added a gabled upper storey, which is depicted in a drawing of Kirkgate dated 1797 by J M W Turner, held at the British Museum.
