Description
Nos 16 and 17 on Kirkgate in Ripon are 18th-century buildings, illustrated in a drawing by J M W Turner from 1797. They are constructed of colour-washed brick and feature a pantiled roof. The buildings rise three storeys and have three bays with cased flush-framed sashes that include glazing bars. There are two doorcases with Tuscan three-quarter columns, a pulvinated frieze, and an open dentilled pediment, which enclose doors with semi-circular fanlights; these may date from the early 19th century, as they do not appear in Turner's drawing. The central doorway has a moulded stone surround, also likely from the early 19th century, leading to a through passage that was likely added after 1797 and incorporates part of the original plaster ceiling cornice. The early or mid-19th-century shopfronts feature panelled pilasters and moulded cornices. At the rear, there are flush-framed sashes and a flush-framed staircase window with a semi-circular head and intersecting glazing bars.
