Description

The Garden House, located 30 metres east of Brompton Hall, is a mid-18th century garden house constructed from dressed limestone, featuring limestone ashlar quoins and sandstone ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building has a rectangular shape at the front and is canted at the rear. It is a single-storey structure with a single-bay pedimented front set on a plinth, showcasing alternately raised and flat quoins. The central entrance consists of a 6-panel door that is accessed by steps and framed by a moulded door-case with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, topped by an uncarved raised panel. A moulded eaves band marks the base of the pedimented gable end.

On the rear, there are two single blocked windows on each canted side, each set in a plain raised surround with a keyblock and sill band. On the right side of the building, a commemorative plaque honors Sir George Cayley, recognized as the Father of Aeronautics, noting his birth in Scarborough on December 27, 1773, and his death at Brompton Hall on December 15, 1857. The plaque states that scientific aeronautical experiments were pioneered from this building, where the aeroplane was defined for the first time between 1799 and 1855. Additionally, on the inner face of the left-hand jamb of the door surround, there is a rough and weathered graffiti inscription, known as the George Cayley Scratching, which likely records a successful flight of one of Sir George Cayley's model airships in 1820. The inscription reads: "YDS 141. CG 1820," accompanied by a rough drawing of a cigar-shaped airship with an underslung car carrying a propeller.
