Description
Brompton-by-Sawdon War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in the early 1920s, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of ashlar sandstone and has a square plan.
The memorial is located next to the High Street, close to the Grade II-listed Manor House. It features a Celtic wheel cross with a simple raised knot work design, set on a short tapering shaft that has a plain panel bordered by torus moulding. The cross shaft rises from a tapering pedestal, which sits on a three-stepped square plinth. The cross is proportionally shorter than the combined height of the pedestal and plinth.
On the south face of the pedestal, there is incised black painted lettering that reads: "ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BROMPTON AND SAWDON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918. 'THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD UNTO US, AND WE WERE NOT HURT; THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY.' I. SAM. 25. MAY THEY REST IN PEACE." The names of the 13 men who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the east and west sides of the pedestal. The south side of the top step of the plinth notes the years 1939 – 1945 and includes four names.
