Description
Further Surgill Head Farmhouse, built in 1666 and altered, is accompanied by an attached barn from 1673, which has also been modified. The farmhouse features coursed dressed stone at the front and rubble elsewhere, topped with stone slate roofs. It has a two-cell plan with the barn partially incorporated into the house and an additional barn at right angles. The house is two storeys high with three bays, featuring 3-light flush square mullion windows on both floors flanking an enclosed gabled porch with kneelers. The porch, dating from the 19th century, has a chamfered surround and a massive lintel above the doorway. There are chimneys on the left gable and at the centre of the ridge. At the rear, there is a 2-light double chamfered stone mullion window and a chamfered doorway. The former barn next to the house has a modern cart entry and several chamfered openings. A plaque set into the wall has raised lettering that reads: "RICHARD AND IENNET HINDLE M:19:AD:1666." Attached to the farmhouse is a later barn featuring a chamfered elliptical-headed cart entry, with the voussoirs numbered for assembly. Beside this entry is another stone inscribed with "RH.IH 1673 RD." Inside the house, there is a chamfered doorway with a Tudor head between the main rooms.
