Description

The eastern garden wall to York House on Yorkersgate has origins dating back to the late 17th century, with later repairs and rebuildings. It is constructed from small squared blocks of Hildenley limestone, laid in courses that follow the slope of the hillside rather than being horizontal. The wall features flat coping stones, and while much of the later rebuilding is also in Hildenley stone, it includes brick, tile, and modern materials.

The wall generally stands 2 to 3 meters high and ramps up over the top terrace, mirroring a later wall to the west. It has been stepped up in other areas. Straight joints in the structure indicate at least four major episodes of rebuilding, primarily in the late 18th and 19th centuries, which included the addition of buttresses. A significant section near the river, which diverts slightly from the original line, is from the 20th century and incorporates modern blockwork that is concealed by reused old masonry.
