Description

The Church of St Wilfrid, built in 1845, is likely designed by John Oates of Harrogate. It is constructed from magnesian limestone and features a steeply-pitched blue slate roof. The church has a four-bay nave with a west bellcote, a south porch at the first bay, and a three-bay chancel with a north vestry, all in an Early English style.

The building has a plinth, and the porch includes a roll-moulded pointed arch with attached columns and a hoodmould. The steeply-pitched roof of the porch is topped with a coping and an ornate cross finial. The nave is adorned with three paired lancet windows separated by buttresses, and a roll-moulded string course runs around the building at window sill level.

The chancel features a central chamfered pointed-arched doorway flanked by lancet windows and buttresses, with gable copings on both the nave and chancel. The east window has three lights, with the central light taller and a stepped hoodmould above it. On the north side, there are lancet windows similar to those on the south side. The west end has two lancet windows divided by a deep stepped buttress that supports the bellcote, which consists of four shouldered arches containing two bells, topped with a spire and weather-vane.

Inside, moulded stone corbels support large roof timbers in cruck-style construction, and the chancel arch is notably tall and narrow. The church was rebuilt at a cost of £800, with stone sourced from nearby Stainley Gill. The Reverend J B Wayte was the vicar at the time, and a few carved stones from the earlier church remain.
