Description

Eastern Farmhouse at High Cayton is a house dated 1607 that has undergone extensive alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is rendered and features large gritstone external stacks and a purple slate roof. It has two storeys and three bays, with a lower two-bay addition to the right and a rear outshut. The entrance is a four-panel half-glazed door located to the left of centre, with a 16-pane sash window to its left, both set in raised surrounds. The remaining windows have mid-20th century cast-iron frames, and the house has stone coped gables and large corniced end stacks.

The two-storey addition includes a board door on the left, a four-pane sash window to the right, and a six-pane side-sliding sash window above. The rear outshut contains small side-sliding sash windows. Inside, the original front wall, now the rear wall of the house and enclosed by the outshut, is approximately 75 centimetres thick and features a chamfered quoined doorway to the left of centre. This doorway is surmounted by a stone carving of a shield with a lion crest, representing the arms of Harrison of Cayton, along with the date 1607. The west room on the ground floor has a cross beamed ceiling, although the panelling from this room was removed and taken to Cayton Hall around 1920. The farmhouse is situated on part of the site of the deserted village of High Cayton and is included for its group value.
