Description
Markington Hall is a large house that dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and limestone, topped with a stone slate roof. The building is two stories high and features a three-bay block with three-story cross wings.
The central entrance has an 8-panel door set within a moulded architrave, flanked by four-light recessed mullioned windows. On the first floor, there are three 16-pane sash windows in flush wood architraves. The left wing has a four-light window with 20th-century stone mullions on each floor. The right wing features four-light recessed-mullion windows on the ground and first floors, and a three-light recessed mullion window with a moulded label and dropped diamond-shaped stops on the second floor. A moulded string course runs along the eaves levels of the first and second floors, and the wings have shaped kneelers and gable copings.
At the rear, there are 20th-century extensions and openings, alongside a 17th-century ground-floor entrance and a mullioned window to the right. The left and right returns of the building include large external chimney stacks.
Inside, the front room on the right has a large fireplace with a segmental stone arch and two ovens against the rear wall. The right (east) wing, which was formerly a chapel, contains a moulded pointed-arched fireplace and large cross beams, one of which has pyramidal stops. Most of the remaining interior features are restorations and alterations from the 1920s and 1930s.
Markington Hall was once occupied by the statesman William Wilberforce, who married the daughter of the owner of the hall.
