SOUTH COWTON NZ 20 SE 2/28 Stables approximately 100 metres to north-west of Pepper Arden - II Stables, rear block now flats. Late C19. Red brick with yellow brick banding, stone dressings and Welsh slate roof. Square courtyard with central range of 2 storeys with clock tower. Classical style. Entrance front, facing south-east: one storey, 15 bays. Central arched carriage entrance with stone architrave and keystone. To either side Tuscan columns on a plinth with frieze and cornice. A patera to either side of keystone. Pediment with stone mutule-cornice. Flanking bays separated by brick quoin pilasters. Stone band at plinth height. A raised brick panel to each bay. End bays break forward and have arched sashes with keystones under stone- coped pediments with ball finials. Stepped and cogged cornice with stone coping. Central range: 2 storeys, 15 bays. Central bay breaks forward. Round arched doorway with fanlight. Segmental-arched 4-pane sashes to either side with board doors with segmental arches in bays 3 and 13. First floor band. Central arched window breaking into open pediment with stepped and cogged eaves. Ashlar coping. To either side brick pilasters separate bays with stepped and cogged eaves. Stone cornice. Central clock tower with clock face in round stone surround. Pyramidal roof surmounted by square stone bellcote. Wings to either side: 9 bays, one storey, in same style as central range. North-east range with carriage arch. Hipped roofs. Rear range: one storey, 24 bays, 4-pane sashes with segmental brick arches. 4-panel doors with segmental brick arches in bays 2, 15, 22. Same style as central range,and,at rear,of 2 storeys with carriage arches.
