Description

The stables at Monteviot Estate date predominantly from the late 1870s, with some earlier 19th century materials incorporated at the east and west ends. This former stable block, which is now housing as of 2010, is an 8- by 4-bay structure, mainly single-storey with an attic, forming a rectangular courtyard. It features distinctive round recessed Scots Baronial corner towers topped with finialled pepperpot roofs. The building is constructed of rubble and squared and snecked red sandstone, with band courses on the towers and the north elevation. The eaves are broken by pentice- and flat-roofed dormers, and there are some bipartite windows along with small upper storey window openings and false windows on the towers. The northwest tower is dated 1879.

The principal elevation faces south and is symmetrical, featuring a central single-storey 7-bay section. This section has a slightly advanced and raised central bay with a round-arched pend opening, leading to a pair of large timber entrance doors with a smaller inset door that opens into the interior courtyard. Buttresses divide the bays, and there are small narrow 4-light upper level window openings. The round towers are positioned at the end bays, with flanking recessed gabled 2-storey bays on the outer sides that include canted 5-light transomed and mullioned windows on the ground floor.

On the north elevation, there is an external timber stair leading to the northeast gable, which features a raised gabled timber entrance door and a bellcote at the gable apex. The northeast tower has a pair of clock faces.

The courtyard elevation displays irregular openings, including some boarded timber doors with fanlights above and several gabled sections. The windows vary in style, with some being timber framed, fixed, bipartite, or plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with purple slates, with some decorative fishscale slates on the pepperpot roofs. Cast iron rainwater goods and some raised skews are also present, along with tall wallhead stacks.

The interior, which was partially seen in 2010, includes some modern timber horse boxes, while other areas have been converted into housing.
