Farmhouse, Harestanes Visitors' Centre, Monteviot Estate

The Former Home Farm and Steading at Harestanes Visitors' Centre on the Monteviot Estate is primarily from the 1870s, with some elements dating back to the early 19th century. This extensive, irregularly shaped, single-storey building features multiple courtyards and includes a former steading to the north, a detached two-storey farmhouse to the south, and a former walled kitchen garden to the southeast. A prominent canted corner tower is located at the northwest, and the building showcases deep gabled eaves and distinctive decorative bargeboarding throughout, all designed according to model farm principles. The structure was partially converted into a visitor centre and workshops in 1979-80, with further modifications in 1992.

The steading features a central enclosed courtyard, with open courtyards to the west and east, now serving as the visitor centre and private housing to the northeast, developed in 2010. The building is constructed of squared and snecked red sandstone with raised sandstone margins and includes decorative timber bargeboarding and finials at the gable peaks. The eaves overhang, and there are some bipartite window openings along with canted bay windows on the ground floor. The two-storey square-plan tower, dated 1877, is located at the northwest and has a steep bell-canted conical roof with battered canted corners.

The central courtyard features a timber-lined verandah supported by metal columns. The windows are predominantly 2-over-4-pane in timber sash and case, with rooflights, graded grey slates on the roof, ridge stacks, and decorative slated polygonal roof vents.

The interior, partially seen in 2010, has been extensively remodelled in 1992 to create craft workshops and open-plan visitor centre space, with private living accommodation to the northeast.

The farmhouse is a two-storey, four-bay building made of coursed and snecked red sandstone with ashlar margins. It features an off-centre gabled porch with decorative bargeboarding on the north elevation and a later porch on the south elevation. The windows are predominantly 6-over-6-pane in timber sash and case, with rooflights and a jerkin-headed roof covered in grey slates, along with gable end stacks.

The former kitchen garden is located to the southeast, enclosed by coped rubble walls on the south and east sides.
