Description
The wheelhouse, located to the west of the west garden wall at Newby Park, dates from the mid-19th century and was built for the Vyner estate of Newby Hall. It features brick piers, a timber and cast-iron mechanism, and a Welsh slate roof. The hipped roof is supported by seven piers, with the eighth side being part of the former pumping house, which is now an engine shed and not of special interest. The wheelhouse retains its framework, which was used to harness two ponies that drew water from the River Ure for the house and gardens. It ceased operation in 1901.
