Description

The kitchen garden walls date from the late 18th century and are possibly designed by William Belwood for William Weddell. They were restored in the mid-20th century. Constructed of red brick, the walls feature rusticated ashlar piers and copings, forming an H-plan layout. The walls reach up to 4 metres in height, with the north-south walls measuring approximately 100 metres long and the linking wall about 200 metres long. The west wall has a double gateway at the north end and a narrower gate at the south end, while the east wall also has similar openings. All the gates are flanked by pilasters that act as buttresses, built in ashlar. These surviving walls are likely part of a larger scheme that included plans for a hothouse and hot walls at Newby, which William Belwood provided around 1777.
