Description
Barclays Bank is an early 18th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It is constructed of local brick in an indeterminate bond, primarily Flemish, with a stone plinth and quoins. The building features a moulded wood eaves cornice and has a fairly high-pitched Welsh slate roof, which may have been raised slightly. There are brick end chimneys and two modern gabled dormers, along with stone kneelers. The structure has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with four windows that have gauged brick arches and keystones, housing sash windows with glazing bars. Notably, in the third bay, there is a two-storey rounded bow, and to the right, an arched yard entrance with quoining. The entrance is accessed by three stone steps leading to a six-panel door topped by an oblong fanlight, all framed within a 19th-century architrave and pilaster surround, complete with a shell hood on brackets.
Inside, there is one fully panelled 18th-century room featuring fluted pilasters flanking the chimney breast, and another room that is partially panelled, showcasing much good woodwork and a short flight of 18th-century staircase. The property is also adorned with wrought iron area railings that have iron finials. Historically, it served as council offices and is noted for being the home of Dr. Yeoman, the first medical officer of the district, prior to local government reorganisation.
