Description
Friars Hurst is a house dating from the late 18th century, constructed of rendered rubble with a purple slate roof and rusticated quoins. The building has two storeys and features three first-floor windows, with a possibly earlier rear range. The central entrance consists of a glazed door set within a rusticated quoined surround, topped with a tripartite keystone. On either side of the door are 20-pane sash windows from the 20th century, which have projecting stone sills and incised lintels. Above, there are 16-pane sashes with renewed projecting sills and incised lintels. The roof is hipped, and there is a chimney stack located at the rear. Inside, the house retains its original stairs at the front and a chamfered spine beam in the parallel rear range. There is a service wing at the rear, but it is not of special interest. The house is situated on the site of the grange of Fountains Abbey.
