Description

Carrmire Gates, Wall, and End Turrets serve as the gateway to the Castle Howard estate and date from the early 18th century, attributed to either Vanbrugh or Hawksmoor. The structure is built from limestone rubble that has been brought to course. It features a round-arched triple-keyed gateway beneath an open pediment, flanked by square rusticated piers topped with pyramids. On either side of the gateway, there is a battlemented wall that extends approximately 30 meters and ends in buttressed circular two-stage mock medieval turrets, which include cruciform arrow slits and battlements. This description is noted in Pevsner's "Yorkshire: The North Riding" published in 1966.
