Description
The Old Tolbooth is a tolbooth building dating from the 17th century, which was raised and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar, with coursed squared stone and a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, with quoins at the corners.
On the ground floor, there are studded board doors to the left of the right bay and to the right of the left bay, both featuring plain lintels. A similar door is located on the right return. Between these doors, there are small boarded openings, with the left one also having a plain lintel. The first floor has three 4-pane casements, each with wedge stone lintels.
At the rear, there are 13 steps leading up to a large 6-panel door, which is topped with a wedge lintel. The steps are flanked by a plain parapet with stone coping. The building features a stack at eaves level on the front and an end stack to the right. The Old Tolbooth is listed partly for its historical significance.
