Description

This building consists of a barn and a cart-shed located approximately 20 metres north-west of Scow Cottage. The barn dates from the early 19th century, while the cart-shed is from the 17th century with 19th-century alterations. Both structures are made of coursed squared gritstone and have graduated stone slate roofs.

The barn features four bays, with a cart entrance in bay 2 that has double board doors, quoined jambs, and a segmental arch, along with a plaque above that has incised decorations of arches and cross-hatching. The byre door in bay 1 has tie-stone jambs and a mucking-out window to the left. In bay 3, a possible byre door has been reduced to a window, and bay 4 has a square window, both with plain stone surrounds. The upper storey of bays 1 and 4 has square pitching doors in plain surrounds, with sills lowered to create full-height doorways. The gable ends feature bulbous kneelers that have been heightened with an additional stone course and gable copings.

On the left side of the barn, there are external steps leading to a board door with tie-stone jambs, a row of three slit vents with round heads in stone surrounds, and a square window in the gable. Much of the stonework is decorated with incised cross-hatching and semicircles.

The cart-shed, located to the left of the barn, has three inserted cart entrances on the ground floor, supported by two stone pillars, with the right entrance featuring rusticated masonry and a projecting band. The upper floor has three round-arched vents with chamfered surrounds, single block jambs, and lintels. The left vent has stone blocking and a projecting ledge below that forms a pigeon entrance. There is also a small round-arched opening with a projecting stone sill on the far right. The left return of the cart-shed has a straight flight of stone steps leading to a door on the upper floor, with deep chamfers on the quoined jambs and a cambered arch over the lintel.

Inside the cart-shed, there are two queen-strut trusses. This building is included for its group value with Scow Cottage and its outbuildings.
