Description

Tumbling Well is a well located on the west side of The Strand in Middleton Tyas. It dates from the 18th century, featuring a stone spout with an ogee head that discharges water into a sunken trough. The mid to late 19th-century surround is made of ashlar and includes flat surfaces on either side for placing vessels. The well has a round-arched surround with a rear wall that holds a marble slab inscribed with a biblical text, which is set in a chamfered frame. The upper surface of the surround is finished with slab coping.
