Description
Black Bull Cottage is an inn and cottage that has been converted into one house. It likely dates from the mid-16th century, with later alterations and additions. The building is timber-framed with brick modifications and has pantile roofs. It stands two storeys high with a rear outshut and features two bays on each side. The older section on the left has brick in English garden wall bond on the ground floor, which includes a central 20th-century studded oak board door and a two-light casement window on either side. The first floor has close studding with straight braces from the posts to the wall plate, and a small two-light casement window in each bay. There is a central double ridge stack made of brick.
The right-hand section, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century, is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has two casement windows on each floor. The ground floor windows have wedge lintels, and there is a brick ridge stack to the right of centre.
At the rear, the outshut is mainly from the 20th century. The left return features a projection with a pantile roof that indicates the roof line of a former neighbouring cottage.
Inside the left-hand section, the framing of the rear wall is exposed, and the front and rear wall framing is jointed near the central chimney. The housebody includes a fireplace with a bressummer that has an ogee doorhead leading to the lobby, along with a spliced joint over a removed heck post. A spit mechanism is fixed to the bressummer, and there is a low cupboard in the side of the stack in the lobby. A wattle and daub smoke-hood is exposed on the first floor.
