Description

The Villa is a house built in 1811, featuring later wings and currently under dual ownership. Constructed for William Lockwood, it is made of pale brown brick in Flemish bond with a pantile roof. The garden front is two stories high and has a pediment, with three bays and a central section that projects forward. This central bay contains two windows, while the side wings are each a single bay. The design is in a Gothic style.

The entrances to the side bays include a three-panelled door for No 47, which has pointed arches and is topped by two-centred fanlights with intersecting tracery. No 49 features a glazed door beneath a similar fanlight. The ground floor has sash windows with intersecting tracery in their heads, and there is a three-course band at the first floor. Above the doors of the side wings are small diamond-shaped windows with concave sides and glazing bars. The central bay has sash windows like those on the ground floor. The side wings curve upwards, leading to a central cogged pediment that is flanked by stone obelisks and was recently topped with a ball finial.

Inside, there is an elegant staircase in No 47 with carved tread ends, simple balusters, and a ramped handrail, while No 49 has a similar staircase. No 47 retains some original features, including a plaster cornice on the ground floor and doors with architraves. The later extensions on each side are not considered of special interest.
