Description
This is an archway dating from the mid-17th century, located approximately 15 metres north of the north-east corner of Hauxwell Hall. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a moulded semicircular arch supported by moulded imposts. The archway is flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters that have an exaggerated entasis. Above the arch is an entablature with a frieze of ogee section. At the top, there is a moulded blocking course that is adorned with the coat of arms of Dalton impaling Wyvill, flanked by caryatids and strapwork, with a satyr mask positioned above. Each end of the blocking course is topped with a ball finial. This archway serves to visually close the fourth side of the north courtyard.
