Description
Chestnut House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house with an attached outbuilding, located on the west side of York Road in Sutton-on-the-Forest. The building dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in an irregular Flemish bond and features a Welsh slate roof. The former outbuilding is made of coursed rubblestone and has a renewed pantile roof.
The main house is two storeys high with three bays and an added wing to the rear right. The former outbuilding, now part of the house, is one storey with an attic and has two bays. The main entrance features a central door with six raised and fielded panels, topped by an overlight with decorative glazing bars, all framed by a wooden architrave with Ionic pilasters, a frieze, and a dentil cornice. The windows are four-pane sashes with flush wood architraves and slightly cambered header-brick arches. There is a first-floor band, tabled and dentilled eaves, and raised verges with tumbled-in brickwork, along with tabled end stacks.
The former outbuilding has a rubblestone front wall with brick quoins on the left side. It features a glazed door under a canopy on the right, a large 16-pane sash window to the left, and a flat-roofed dormer with small-pane casements added around 1980. The raised verge includes tumbled-in brickwork and a tabled stack, with a return of brick that has one 12-pane sash window.
Additionally, early 19th-century cast iron railings made by W Thomlinson-Walker: Iron Works, York, are attached to the front of the house. These railings have square corner posts and gate posts topped with acorn finials.
