Description
Sterne House is a house from the second half of the 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of pinkish brick in Flemish bond and has a pantile roof. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, featuring a central stair-hall entry plan. There are two steps leading up to the central door, which consists of six fielded panels and has an over light with margin glazing bars. The door is framed by a wooden doorcase with pulvinated pilasters, a canopy, and a panelled reveal. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set within flush wood architraves, and have stone sills from the 1980s. The eaves are decorated with modillion, and the building has renewed moulded stone kneelers and coping. There are tabled end stacks and tumbled-in brickwork on the left gable.
At the rear, there is an attached single-storey former wash-kitchen, now part of the house, which features a part-glazed door from around 1980 and a 12-pane sash window. A former stable, now known as Yew Tree Cottage, is attached to the end of the wash-kitchen but is not of special interest. Inside, the house has a closed-string, straight-flight stair with a moulded handrail on turned balusters and a square newel post. The left-hand room contains a large elliptical-arched brick fireplace, with the arch rebuilt in 1983. The right-hand room features a fireplace with an eared wooden architrave and a dentil cornice.
