Description
The former stables to Sutton Park, which includes numbers 1 and 2 The Bungalow, are now used as a garage and accommodation. They date from the early to mid-19th century and have been altered over time. The building is constructed of pinkish brick in Flemish bond and features a Lakeland slate roof. It has a U-shaped layout that is open on the south side.
The main section is two stories high and consists of eight bays, with single-storey wings projecting from the end bays—six bays to the left and five bays to the right. The garage, which was originally a coach-house, has doorways with double board doors, each featuring a small glazed pane. Other entrances include half-glazed doors with glazing bars and overlights, all set within wooden doorcases that have pilasters, friezes, and cornices.
The windows on the ground floor are 12-pane sashes, while the first floor has unequally-hung 9-pane sashes, all with projecting stone sills and cambered brick arches. The main range has a central garage door set in a shallow, flat-roofed porch, which includes an oculus with glazing bars above. To the right, there are three bays with a central door flanked by windows, and three windows above; to the left, there are three bays similar in design but without a window above the door. The roof is hipped with a small, central, louvred cupola topped with a dome and weathervane, along with a cross-ridge stack on the right.
The left-hand side wing features triple garage doors on the left, a window, and two doors, while the right-hand side wing has a door, a window, and another door with an additional window in the end wall. Both wings have hipped roofs, with the right-hand wing adorned with a ball-on-cushion finial and a stack at the rear.
