Description

Sycamore Farmhouse is a house with a lintel dated 'W G 1619' and features 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed gritstone and has a stone slate roof. The building follows a baffle-entry plan and has two storeys with four first-floor windows. There is a four-panel door to the left of the right window, which has a shallow pointed arch above it. To the right, there is a four-light double-chamfered mullion window, although the centre mullion has been removed to accommodate a horizontal sliding sash. A 20th-century French window is located to the left of the door, and there is a four-panel sash window with a splayed incised lintel to the left of that. The first-floor windows, from left to right, include two four-pane sashes with splayed lintels, a small squared chamfered window, and a two-light double-chamfered mullion window that was formerly a four-light window, now with four panes and a horizontal-sliding sash. The building features ashlar coping, shaped kneelers, and a large stack over the door as well as at the left end. Inside, there is an open fireplace next to the entrance and remains of a stone spiral stair against the centre of the rear wall. There is slight evidence of a blocked arch in the front wall where the 19th-century windows were inserted, suggesting that this may be an early example of a laithe house prior to the 19th-century alterations.
