Description
The three lamp posts on the Crown Roundabout were designed in 1899 and were originally intended for electric lighting. They were repositioned in the mid-20th century and now feature late 20th-century lanterns.
These lamp posts are situated on the pedestrian refuges at the junction of Montpellier Road, Royal Parade, and Cold Bath Road. They are tall, cast iron structures with a cylindrical base that includes an access door displaying the Harrogate coat of arms. Above the base, a series of bands leads to a beaded ring from which two acanthus leaves rise, clasping the flared bottom of the post. After four additional bands, which include a flange and a crown of palm leaves, the post transitions into a plain circular column that culminates in a square block supporting ball-ended ladder supports. The top of the post is bell-ended and features further embossed decoration, with a modern lantern adorned with decorative detailing positioned above.
The lamp posts are set within a roundabout that is landscaped with trees and surrounded by predominantly 19th-century commercial buildings. Notable nearby structures include the Crown Hotel, which is a prominent feature of the junction, as well as the Edwardian chemist’s shop at 4 Royal Parade, the White Hart Hotel, and the White Cottage, an octagonal pavilion originally constructed as a ticket office.
