GILLING WITH HARTFORTH AND SEDBURY WATERS LANE (south side) Range of agricultural buildings approximately 5 metres north-east of Crabtree House
GV II
Stables for farm horses, turnip house and blacksmith's shop, now piggeries. Dated 1881. Snecked sandstone rubble, with ashlar dressings, C20 clay interlocking tile and C20 clay pantile roofs. Single storey, each part of range dropped in height down hillside. Ashlar dressings have herringbone tooling and draughted margins. Quoins. Openings are quoined and have rounded arrises. From left: stables, with part-shuttered window; wide opening; part-shuttered window; C20 clay interlocking tile roof. Turnip house: part-shuttered window; double sliding board doors; stable door; part- shuttered window C20 clay interlocking tile roof. Blacksmith's shop: no openings; ashlar square corniced eaves chimney; C20 clay pantile roof. Right return: in gable, pointed-arched stone with recessed panel inscribed with ligatured date, and triangular pigeoncote. Inside stable entrance: this was originally open through into the yard beyond, but this has been blocked; here the farm horses were harnessed; the good stonework continues on both sides, with matching doors and windows, and with pitching doors to haylofts above; the stable to left has wooden stalls furniture; king-post roof trusses.
