Description

Crag Hill Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared pink and grey gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building consists of three sections: a two-storey main bay facing east, a lower two-storey bay set back to the right, and a two-storey, two-bay additional wing at right angles to the main structure.

The main bay has rusticated quoins and features a four-panel door on the right, set within an eared architrave topped by an entablature with S-scrolls and a triangular pediment that interrupts the moulded first-floor string course. To the left, there is a two-light window in a stone architrave with a lowered sill, and above it, a similar window with a replaced sill. The building has a moulded eaves cornice, shaped kneelers, gable copings, and a corniced stack on the left side.

On the right side, a short length of recessed walling includes a narrow window with a plain surround. The projecting wing to the right has a half-glazed four-panel door in a chamfered irregularly quoined surround, with fixed and side-sliding sash windows on the right and first floor, all in plain stone surrounds. The wing also features turned-back kneelers and gable copings, along with a rendered stack on the right.

At the rear (west) of the main range, there is a blocked tall narrow round-headed window with a transom on the right, a 20th-century inserted door in the centre, and a long low window in a plain surround to the left, with a similar window above that has a 9-pane side-sliding sash in a flush frame. There is a lean-to addition to the left that is not of special interest.
