Description
Westow Hall is a house built in the late 17th century, with some remodelling done in the 20th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed limestone with ashlar dressings and has a pantile roof. The house features a staircase hallway entry and has two cross wings at the rear. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has seven bays. The building has rusticated quoins, and the central bay slightly projects forward and is faced with ashlar. The entrance includes a half-glazed door set within a Gibbs surround that carries a broken segmental pediment. The ground and first floors have 15-pane unequal sash windows with keyed stone architraves, and the central first-floor window is flanked by pilasters. There is a cyma-moulded eaves course, and the attic features casements in 20th-century inserted dormers with alternate triangular and segmental heads. The gable has coping, shaped kneelers, and end and ridge stacks. Inside, there are two well-crafted wooden fireplaces with foliate designs, and a blocked tripartite fireplace in the kitchen. The interior also includes an open string staircase with a column-on-vase design and a ramped handrail. An early Sun Fire Insurance plaque is located on the left gable end.
