Description
Herbert Cottage is a former stable block, originally part of Westow Hall, and now used as accommodation. It dates from the mid-18th century, with later 20th-century additions. The building is of two distinct phases of construction. The left-hand side is built of brick in an irregular bond, while the right-hand side is constructed of hammer-dressed limestone. It has a pantile roof. The building is two storeys high, with a single-storey extension of the 20th century on the left side. There are four first-floor windows. A 20th-century door with nine fielded panels is set within a Gibbs surround, flanked by a small eight-pane sash window and a larger sixteen-pane sash window, all standing on a continuous sill. A large 20th-century casement window is situated beneath a segmental arch on the right-hand side. The first floor features six-pane sash windows with keyed lintels on the left section, and a sash window with glazing bars on the right. A dentilled eaves course, gable coping, and stacks are visible, rising through the rear pitch of the roof. The 20th-century addition to the left is not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
