Description
Sinnington Grange Mill is a corn mill that has been converted into a grain-drying store. It was built in 1844, with part of the front being rebuilt around 1980. The mill features an iron frame encased in red and burnt brick laid in English garden wall bond, topped with a slate roof and a brick stack. It is designed in a bridge-type style and consists of a basement and four storeys, with five bays.
The entrance includes a round-headed door that is nail-studded and set within a rounded-arris brick surround, accessed by a double flight of steps. On either side of the doorway are two segment-headed slatted windows with stone sills, all beneath cambered brick arches. The remaining windows are similar, but those on the left side of the upper floors were removed due to the rebuilding. The first-floor center opening is blocked by a recessed panel that bears the inscription: SINNINGTON GRANGE MILL AD MDCCCXLIV Burton.
The mill features a stepped eaves course, coped gables, and shaped kneelers, with a stack located at the left end. The right return has a semicircular arch leading to the wheel chamber at the basement level, while the left return has a low rounded arch over the tailrace. The tailrace was drained through a vaulted brick channel that still exists beneath the current concreted yard.
Inside, the basement level retains the iron high-breast water wheel and pit wheel. On the first floor, there are two bedstones from the original four pairs of stones, and a sack hoist operates through the center of the mill. The upper floors are supported by cast-iron columns with braced capitals. The mill was operational until 1978.
