Description
Castle Vaults is a public house dating from the mid-18th century. The building is rendered with a slate roof and stands four storeys high, one bay wide facing the Market Place to the north and two bays deep towards Castlegate. It features massive quoins.
The facade facing the Market Place includes three stone Doric pilasters on the ground floor that flank two sash windows with glazing bars. Above this is a triglyph frieze beneath a canted bay. To the left, there is a sash window in a single-storey curved bay that wraps around the corner. On the first floor, a 20-pane sash window is located in the canted bay, flanked by additional sashes with glazing bars, and there is a cornice above. The canted walling continues to the second and third (attic) storeys, which also have similar windows. There are projecting sill bands on the first and second floors, and a dentilled eaves cornice. The roof is hipped with a stack on the right.
On the left return, the right bay has quoins, while those on the left are painted below the first-floor window lintel level. There is a 20th-century door with a sash window to the right, and two sashes with glazing bars on the first and second floors. The third floor has blind windows. The bay to the left is likely a 19th-century extension that has undergone 20th-century alterations and additions.
