Description
Nos 33A and 33 are two shops located in Knaresborough's Market Place, dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a Westmorland slate roof. They rise two storeys and have three bays, turning the corner towards Castlegate, with quoins on the right side. A limestone plinth with a projecting band serves as a window sill on the right. The shop fronts were built around 1960 and include recessed sashes with glazing bars, projecting sills, and stone wedge lintels. There is a blind window on the first floor to the right. The buildings have wooden gutter brackets, a hipped roof, and three tall brick stacks along the ridge. The right return features limestone, a 20th-century door on the left, and a sash window with glazing bars at the center of the first floor. Notably, No 33A was part of the Literary Institution Building before the Town Hall was constructed.
