Description

Nos 44 and 46 Market Place is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the 16th to 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is likely timber-framed, now rendered, and has a Westmorland slate roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays.

No. 46, on the left, features a plate-glass shop window to the left of a 20th-century door. No. 44, on the right, has a central glazed shop door with a three-pane window to the right, both set in a 19th-century casing with a cornice. There is a bowed window to the left with 20th-century glazing, and above it, a 24-pane bow window and a 16-pane sash window above the shop window. The front wall extends up to a blocking course, with a brick stack at the eaves on the left and a rendered stack on the ridge above the right-hand door.

On the left side, the gable end of No. 46 has a small three-pane window on the ground floor to the left. The butcher's shop premises continue behind No. 46 into Nos 2 and 4 Kirkgate.

Inside No. 46, the ground floor has a large beam to the right of the entrance, supported by a stone column, with joists to the right featuring pyramidal chamfer stops. The roof contains three trusses with wind-braces and large collars. The interior of No. 44 was not seen during the resurvey.
