LINDRICK WITH STUDLEY ROYAL AND FOUNTAINS STUDLEY PARK The Obelisk approximately 80 metres west of Church of St Mary

GV II

Obelisk. c1805 for Elizabeth Aislabie. Ashlar. Base, corniced pedestal approximately 3 metres high, obelisk approximately 15 metres high. It is set diagonally and was the culmination of the long drive and view to Ripon Cathedral, before the construction of St Mary's church (qv). Elizabeth Aislabie was the wife of Charles Allanson of Bramham and daughter of William Aislabie (d1781) who had continued his father's work at Studley Royal. The obelisk replaced a stepped pyramid of exactly the same height, which William had erected in 1742 to the memory of John Aislabie, his father. A Scheduled Ancient Monument. W T C Walker, personal communication.
