Description

The Pheasantry is a gamekeeper's house built around 1875 for the first Marchioness of Ripon. It features coursed squared gritstone and a purple and grey slate roof. The building has two storeys and an irregular plan. On the north-east facade, there is a two-storey tower with a four-panel door set in a roll-moulded four-centred arch, topped with a pyramidal roof and an iron corona. To the left, a wide bay projects and includes a stone-mullioned canted bay window adorned with hound-masks on the window cornice. Above this bay, there is a two-light mullioned window with a carved stag's head beneath a pointed hood-mould. A tall lateral stack is positioned to the left.

The garden wall is approximately 15 metres long and 1.5 metres high, with railings above made of bars featuring scrolled finials and supports for the rails. The gate piers stand about 2 metres high and have pointed caps, while the gate itself is a single leaf with bars topped with trefoil finials.
