Description
Marygate packhorse bridge is a packhorse bridge that dates from the 18th century or earlier. It is constructed from rough limestone rubble, with handmade brick forming the arches. Later repairs and deck surfacing have been done using modern materials.
The bridge, along with its approach causeways, measures just over 30 meters in length and around 2 meters in width. It features three arches made from single arch rings of handmade bricks, which rise from rubble stone abutments. The central arch is segmental, while the flanking arches are depressed and may have been built as three-centred basket arches. Each arch has an approximately equal span of just over 2 meters. During the site inspection in 2025, it was noted that the stream was only flowing through the westernmost arch. To the east of the arches, there is a culvert in the causeway that forms a flood channel, constructed with undressed stone slab lintels.
