Description

The garden walls, gateways, and gate piers attached to Nunnington Hall date from the late 17th century. The south gateway was relocated from the north side of Nunnington Hall during minor alterations by Walter Brierley. The gateways and gate piers are made of limestone ashlar, while the walls are constructed from dressed limestone and feature wrought- and cast-iron gates.

The walls stand approximately 3.5 metres high and were originally topped with moulded coping, although some sections have been replaced with flat coping. There are gateways in both the north and south garden walls, each approximately 5.8 metres high. These gateways are built of bolstered blocks and topped with an entablature that includes a moulded cornice and a broken pediment, which features a cartouche and a ball and pedestal finial. The gateway in the south wall replaces a clair-voyee that was part of the original garden design but has since been removed. The current gateway includes a wrought-iron gate that replicates the balcony design found on the south front of the hall.

The gate piers located in the east and west garden walls are about 4.5 metres high, made of bolstered blocks, and also feature a moulded cornice along with ball and pedestal finials. The opening in the east wall contains cast-iron gates with fleur-de-lys-tipped railings.
