Description

Nunnington Mill is a mill that has been converted into a granary, dating from the mid to late 18th century and enlarged and partly rebuilt in the 19th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone with tooled quoins, while the rebuilding features rusticated stone. The roof is covered with renewed pantiles and has a brick stack. This is a bridge-type mill with a four-storey, five-bay front. The ground floor features a wheel arch made of rusticated voussoirs at the right end. The windows are all top-opening lights with heavy lintels, although those on the ground floor have been renewed. The gables are coped with shaped kneelers, and there is a stack at the left end. The rear of the mill is largely obscured by a later cart-shed. The right end bay has stable doors on the ground and first floors, along with a weatherboard lucam extending to the second and third floors.

Inside, the machinery on the ground floor is now boarded up. An under-shot hybrid wheel with a cast-iron rim and centre, along with wooden spokes and paddles, remains, as do the pit-wheel and wallower. The original stone floor still holds three pairs of under-driven stones, which are partly dismantled, though one pair retains its furniture. An iron crown wheel with wooden teeth, bevel gear, and layshaft with pulleys are still in position. The mill was operational until around 1960. The cart-shed at the rear is not of special interest.
