Description
Dormer Cottage is a house dating back to 1712, with earlier fabric and alterations from the 19th century and a mid-20th century restoration. It is built of coursed gritstone rubble with a stone slate roof; the interior reveals remnants of cruck construction. The house is one-and-a-half storeys and three bays wide, with quoins. A board door sits to the right of centre, within a moulded surround, featuring an inscription on the lintel: "D M 1712." Modern windows are located to the left and far left, with a blocked doorway situated between them. A sash window with glazing bars is found in a flush wood architrave to the far right. Upstairs, a large modern dormer sits above the entrance, and three modern windows are set under the eaves within 17th-century chamfered stone surrounds. Large external stacks are present at the left and right gable ends, as well as a ridge stack above the entrance. Inside, the central room retains cruck blades visible against a partition wall, which appears to have been sawn off at first-floor level, along with a large open fireplace. A longitudinal beam with chamfer and stops is also visible. The first-floor purlins are re-used timbers.
